Stockholm named “great city to discover” in 2012

TripAdvisor names Stockholm and Tallinn among “15 destinations on the rise”

TripAdvisor has named 15 “great cities” to discover around the world this year. The only Nordic and Baltic destinations on the list are Stockholm and Tallinn. It praises Stockholm as “a fascinating, compact city” full of contrasts. Besides Gamla Stan it recommends the “trendsetting” island Södermalm, leafy Djurgården and sites ranging from “Vasa Museum, with its 1628 warship, to Skansen Open-Air Museum, where a zoo, festivals and 150 historic buildings inform and entertain.”
An atmospheric Old Town is the star in Tallinn’s crown, “an enthralling hodgepodge of medieval streets and spires”. It’s a small city and the tourist areas are “safe and easily explored on foot”. TripAdvisor recommends buying a Tallinn Card for public transport; a visit to Rocca-al-Mare Open Air Museum to see typical rural Estonian taverns, windmills and watermills; and climbing St Olav’s, once the tallest spire in the world.
Other destinations in the TripAdvisor list include Lagos (Portugal), Hua Hin (Thailand), Seminyak (Indonesia), Moscow, Bucharest, Innsbruck and Turin.
