Lonely Planet says Stockholm is cool, seductive and stately
Lonely Planet has create a shortlist of its favourite cities for travel next year, as it often does around this time of year, and Stockholm is listed as number five. Each of the top 10 destinations “is poised for greatness in 2012,” the popular publisher says. While fans of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and other Stieg Larsson books come to look for the underbelly of the Swedish capital, in fact Stockholm today is as perfect as it’s ever been, the publisher says. “This is as seductive a capital city as can be imagined – cosy yet cosmopolitan, wilfully alternative and effortlessly picturesque.” Despite the expense involved in staying, incoming tourists are richly rewarded with trendy design shops, bohemian bars, the “cool” island of Södermalm and the stately parks of Djurgården.
Other cities named in the list are London (being transformed for the 2012 Olympics), Muscat, Bangalore, Cádiz, Guimaraes, Santiago, Hong Kong, Orlando and Darwin.
