Stockholm-Oslo high-speed rail plan axed

Plan to cut journey times between Nordic capitals suspended
Sweden’s state-owned train operator SJ says it has been forced to cancel its plan to cut rail travel times between the Swedish and Norwegian capitals because of an unexpected announcement by its counterpart on the other side of the border.
SJ had been planning to launch a high-speed X 2000 train on the line from August 9, slashing journey times from six to four-and-a-half hours, with three departures a day. This would have attracted more business travellers away from flying. Currently there are just two train journeys a day on the cumbersome rail link between the two cities.
But Norway’s rail operator Jernbaneverket has now revealed plans to change overhead cables on the Lilleström-Kongsvinger line, a job that will take two-and-a-half years.
“Jernbaneverket’s announcement so close to the start of traffic was a cold shower and a shock to us,” SJ chief executive Crister Fritzson told the newspaper Dagens Nyheter. “I am saddened that SJ was not given any information about this earlier.
