Storm hits thousands more US flights

As many as 6,500 flights cancelled, 2,500 delayed

Thousands more flights have been cancelled as a storm pushes strong winds and heavy snow northwards through the US after striking the southeast of the country. As many as 6,500 flights have been cancelled and another 2,500 delayed.

The storm, which earlier paralysed Georgia and South Carolina, has now closed much of Washington. Around 45 centimetres of snow are expected in some areas. Three quarters of a million homes and businesses are without power.

A thousand people spent the night on cots and mats at Charlotte Douglas Airport in North Carolina, while many motorists got stuck on the roads. Atlanta and Philadelphia airports are also hard hit. Weather warnings are in effect from North Carolina to Maine.
