Strategy yields good results at Faroes airport

Vagar Airport sees 10.5% more passengers in Q1
The Faroes’ main airport saw a 10.5% rise in passenger numbers for the first quarter of this year, to 56,138. This puts Vagar Airport on track to beat the 272,385 people who passed through in 2015.
Ticket fares have reduced in recent few years as the fees at the airport have been lowered, leading to a slow but steady rise in passenger figures since 2011.
Vagar Airport had expected a fall in passenger numbers for the first quarter of 2016, since the solar eclipse of March 2015 gave it around 4,000 extra people, but this did not happen.
“As the Faroese economy is strong and unemployment is low, there is big domestic demand for travel. Inbound demand and a rise in tourists and business travel is proving to be an excellent mix in order to continue growth,” said Jákup Sverri Kass, Vagar Airport’s chief executive.
The airport continues to invest in its facilities and recently bought two new fire trucks, raising preparedness from CAT 6 to CAT 7. Other improvements include new measuring tools and new communications equipment in the tower.
A new duty-free store is proving to be an effective source of revenue, allowing the airport to keep fees low and offer incentive schemes for new routes. The aim, the airport says, is to be cheaper that competing airports – especially Copenhagen, which supplies 85% of Vagar’s traffic flows.
