Strike causes chaos today at Frankfurt Airport

Airport security personnel walk out for the day

So far more than 40 flights have been cancelled at Frankfurt Airport today, the result of a security personnel strike. The union Verdi says the strike will last until 23:00.

“There have been 41 cancellations,” said a spokesman for airport operator Fraport.

This includes 35 Lufthansa flights. More flights may be axed during the day, the spokesman added, and long delays are expected.

Verdi wants a standard hourly pay rate of €16 for security employees in the state of Hesse, but employers have offered only €10 to €13 per hour. Security staff in other states get up to €15, the union said. But the Federal Association of the Security Industry argues that the demands are unrealistic and cannot be met. A meeting between the two sides is scheduled for March 5.
