Transport hit in France’s latest public sector strike
Transport from, to and within France is being hit today in a nationwide public sector strike called by unions against President Macron’s proposed employment reforms.
It is the first time in ten years that nine unions are jointly calling on employees to walk out as a sign of unity against the government.
Around 130 demonstrations and gatherings are planned and 5.4 million workers are being urged to join in the strike. Further similar disruption in France is likely during the coming months.
The French civil aviation authority is recommending that airlines cut their flights by 30%. Airports worst affected are likely to be Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly, Beauvais, Lyon, Nice, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes.
However, rail services operated by TGV, Transilien, TER, Eurostar and Thalys are operating as normal. Only the CFDT-Cheminots and SUD-rail unions are telling workers to strike. In Paris, buses will have to avoid a march between Republique and Nation.
Meanwhile, hospital unions are joining in for the first time since 2009, while police, tribunals, unemployment offices and schools are also affected.
