Strikes to hit travel in Europe this week

Air and local transport affected in Italy and Portugal

Air travel in Europe will be affected by more strikes this week, as airline and public transport staff protest in Portugal and Italy. Employees at the Portuguese national carrier TAP are planning to strike from March 21 to 23 against pay cuts and redundancies. In addition, demonstrations are planned in Lisbon and other major cities on Saturday against the government’s austerity measures. Local transport throughout Portugal is also expected to be hit by strike action on Friday.
In Italy, airline crew at Alitalia are planning to strike on Friday afternoon, from noon until 16.00. Passengers are advised to check with the airline before travelling. Local transport in Italy will also be affected by strike action on Friday, but this will vary depending on the city.
