Sverigeflyg proclaims “record summer”

Stockholm-Visby route gives carrier a kick

Summer is not quite over yet, but Swedish domestic and charter airline Sverigeflyg says it will be a record season. Exactly 65,079 passengers flew with the carrier during July, an increase of 3.4% compared to last year’s record high.

One of the factors contributing to a record month was that Almedalsveckan, an annual political event on the island of Gotland, was more crowded than ever before. This year the airline flew to Almedal from nine different cities – from Umeå in the north to Malmö in the south.

Sverigeflyg said that competition on the Stockholm-Visby route was harder than ever, but that its flights on the route increased during the remaining weeks of July.

“Summer is a period of less demand for domestic travel, but on some of our routes it is the peak period,” said Sverigeflyg CEO Christer Paulsson. “This year we have seen a fantastic development on our lines to classic summer destinations such as Visby, Angelholm and Halmstad.”

Sverigeflyg warned that the threat of the introduction of a flight tax may endanger the future of Stockholm Bromma Airport, its base. The airport is a contributing factor to the airline’s success, it said.

“Our ambition is to grow together with the region’s need for good and affordable transportation,” Paulsson said. “The fact that Bromma Airport is threatened is not just a blow for Stockholm, it is above all a blow to the economy of our regions that depend on good communications to evolve.”
