Sweden among best in Europe for rock-climbing

Editor-in-chief of Climb magazine picks best climbs

If you’re a keen boulderer, writes David Pickford, editor-in-chief of Climb magazine, one of the most talked-about bouldering areas in Europe is Västervik, on Sweden’s Baltic coast. The site is one of eight places in Europe that Pickford lists in the Guardian newspaper.

Four hours by car from Stockholm, Västervik has “a vast collection of granite boulders strewn across a landscape of coastal inlets, small islands and dense forests,” he says. A bouldering trip can be combined with a long weekend “soaking up ultra-cool Stockholm; climbing doesn’t get much more glamorous than that.”

Europe’s other key climbing locations described in the article include the multi-pitch climbing (routes normally longer than 50 metres climbed in different stages, or “pitches”) in Ailefroide, Écrins, France; the limestone cliffs of Portland in the UK; Sicily’s San Vito Lo Capo peninsula; and Siurana in Catalonia, one of the world’s premier climbing areas.
