Sweden’s second city occupies the whole podium for the country’s best hotels, which are a base for exploring this city of design.
Three Gothenburg hotels have topped TripAdvisor’s list of Sweden’s 25 best hotels. Upper House is the nation’s number-one hotel according to the popular review site closely followed by, in order, Hotel Pigalle and the Avalon Hotel.
It is the third year in a row that the list is headed by Upper House.
It is described in recent TripAdvisor reviews as “the best hotel ever”, “an extraordinary hotel”, a “luxus stayover” with “amazing rooms with views over Gothenburg” and an “excellent spa and [heated] open-air pool” with “a breath-taking view over the city and Liseberg” amusement park.
In 2018, Gothenburg occupied the top two places, but this year Gothenburg “fills the entire podium”, as the Gothenburg Convention Bureau Göteborg & Co puts it.
However, it is not until places 21 and 24 that there are more of the city’s properties, namely the Dorsia Hotel & Restaurant in 21st and Sankt Jörgen Park in 25th.
Sweden’s best three hotels are known for their design, and Göteborg & Co points to other topical aspects to Gothenburg for design aficionados.
On February 23, the Röhsska Museum reopens after having been closed for renovation for a long time. The convention bureau describes it as “the perfect place to experience design from different eras and places”.
The sauna in Frihamnen on Hisingen is part of the work being done before Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary in 2021, designed by the German architectural collective Raumblabor Berlin.
Its façade consists of 100% recycled materials and the walls of the dressing room are made of 12,000 recycled glass bottles.
Around Magasinsgatan there are many unique design shops including Artilleriet for a mix of modern and vintage interior design, Room 21 with interior design and furniture in the Scandinavian style and Tapetmagasinet with English-style wallpapers, pillows and interior details. And Miksajo on Vallgatan is a unisex store focusing on fashion, design and lifestyle.
Just outside Gothenburg, in an old factory in Lindome, lies the design centre Spinneriet, home to “several exciting shops, artists, second-hand shops and a cozy restaurant”, Göteborg & Co recommends.
