Swedes, Norwegians can get visas in India

Number of nationalities to get visas on arrival increases

Soon Swedes and Norwegians visiting India won’t have to hunt around for a visa in advance. They are two of 40 nationalities up for automatic visas on arrival to the country.

Applying for a visa before travelling can be time consuming, especially during high season, although processing times have been improving. Charter companies have difficulty selling last-minute holidays as a result. The Indian government has now recognised that this is an obstacle to tourism.

Not all types of visas will be available on arrival at the airport, but the three most common – work, business and tourist visas – will.

“This is very big news,” Rajendra Kumar Bhati, India’s tourism chief for the Nordic countries, said. “We look forward to once again getting the region’s biggest charter companies to fly direct to India. We can offer every culture in addition to some of the country’s best beaches, so our customers can both relax and enjoy memorable content in the holidays.”

A number of nationalities, including Finns, can already get visas on arrival. The proposal to increase the number of nationalities who can do this is not new. From time to time in recent years, news of such an enlargement has been leaked to the media. But now the Indian government has officially declared it to be in the pipeline.

Among the countries to be covered by the new simpler rules for visas are, besides Sweden and Norway, also the USA, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Ireland, the UAE and Saudi Arabia,.

Airports with visas available include Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
