Owner of empty hotel survives without food or water
The Swedish-born owner of an empty hotel in Austria survived after being trapped in a lift for four days without food, water or heating.
Thomas Fleetwood, 58, was alone making a final check of the property before vacating the Hotel Eden in the resort of Bad Gastein near Salzburg when the tiny one-person lift he was in broke down, according to a report in the Austrian Times. He had left his mobile phone on his desk.
“The lift has never broken down before. I just hadn’t expected anything to happen,” he told the Austrian Times. “I broke a small glass panel at the front door of the lift and that gave me some fresh air, and I tried to take off the roof of the lift to climb out but that didn’t help either.”
He added that he didn’t panic and that a survival course with the Swedish military had helped him endure the ordeal. He was discovered when a friend delivering bread alerted rescue services after seeing a pile of mail outside the hotel.
