Swedish rail operator SJ is doubling the seats on some departures – and it lists top 10 most popular Christmas rail destinations.
Booking pressure on Christmas rail journeys is unusually high this year, says Swedish rail operator SJ. So it is doubling the number of seats on several of its Christmas weekend high-speed departures this year. In total, there are over 6000 new seats to fill.
Christmas and New Year bookings show an increase of 13% between December 21 and 31, compared with the same period last year, so SJ will connect “several extra cars” on many of the most popular departures.
“More and more people are taking the train for the Christmas celebrations, but as a train operator we have no possibility to put additional departures on the schedules at such short notice,” explains SJ spokesperson Tobbe Lundell.
“That’s why we are making the effort to put in extra cars where they’re most needed.”
The additional carriages will help create over 6000 seats onboard SJ’s high-speed trains between Stockholm and Gothenburg and between Stockholm and Umeå.
“Stockholm and Gothenburg are the season’s two most popular destinations. At the same time, we are seeing a strong increase in travel to the north. Umeå accounts for the single biggest increase during Christmas, by 42%,” says Lundell.
The period with the biggest pressure comes from Friday December 21, but Lundell says there are still opportunities to find rail journeys across the country on Christmas Eve.
“During Christmas, many people leave the big city stresses behind to meet friends and relatives. Falun is a very popular destination, but also Örebro and Mora,” Lundell says, although other destinations appear in the top-ten lists below.
