Swedish ski resort to be championship host

Host cities announced for skiing world championships

The International Skiing Federation (FIS) has announced the hosts of the key events in its World Championships for 2018 and 2019. Sweden’s ski resort Åre was chosen to host the 2019 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. It won nine votes to beat Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy.

Mats Arjes, president of the Swedish Ski Association: “We are very, very proud, and we are looking forward to welcoming you all to Åre in 2019. I would also like to thank Cortina for a very challenging competition, and I really hope that we will come to Cortina and see the World Championships in Italy in the future.”

The FIS Council awarded the hosting rights for the 2018 FIS Ski Flying World Championships to Oberstdorf in Germany. Seefeld in Austria was voted ahead of Oberstdorf to host the FIS 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships.

Park City in Utah, USA, will host the joint 2019 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships. The world championships for freestyle skiing and snowboarding will be held at the same site.

Åre is little more than a village but is one of the Nordic region’s best-known ski resorts, located close to the border with Norway. Around 25% of its income comes from tourism. The resort previously hosted the Alpine World Championships in 1954 and 2007.
