Taliban attack airport, at least 27 dead

Most of the dead are security guards and airline staff

Gunfire is reported to be continuing at the biggest airport in Pakistan, as an attack that began last night has left at least 27 people dead, most of them security guards and also airline employees.

Pakistan’s Taliban is claiming responsibility for the attack at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, which started at an older terminal used for VIP flights and cargo. Large bomb blasts could be heard from the area. One passenger, Ignas Vosylius, the head of sales of a Lithuanian company, was quoted as saying he heard “several explosions” just after his plane landed.

The gunfire this morning comes hours after the army said it had taken control of the situation and killed all 10 attackers. All flights have been diverted to other airports.

No planes appear to have been damaged, which the Pakistani government thinks was one of the aims of the attackers.
