Teenage agent scams TUI for luxury lifestyle

Business-class flights booked to cities around the world

A teenage travel agent has admitted spending more than £70,000 (€82,000) on a luxury lifestyle while deceiving his customers.

Reece Scobie, aged 19, from Perth in Scotland, worked for TUI-owned operator Thomson. He booked business-class flights to destinations around the world including Singapore, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Abu Dhabi over a period of six months, a court heard. He also booked round-the-world trips visiting destinations like Dubai, Auckland and Vancouver, staying in luxury hotels.

Despite working with Thomson for only two months, Scobie continued to use the company’s passwords to book flights and hotels after leaving his job. He found he could still gain access to the tour operator’s online booking systems.

He used both his name and a number of aliases, staying at many hotels within the Hilton chain and Sofitel at Heathrow.

He also managed to scam another travel agency. While in a British Airways business lounge at one airport, he discovered that a previous computer user, who worked for Cambridge Business Travel, had not properly logged off. He scanned the emails and got access to the company’s booking system, using it to book more flights.

Scobie’s lawyers say that the teen has Asperger syndrome. Psychiatric reports are being carried out.
