Tensions grow in Thailand after new attack

Three people killed and more than 20 others injured

A grenade and gun attack on an anti-government protest camp in Bangkok has killed three people and injured more than 20 others, the BBC reports. The camp attacked was by the city’s Democracy Monument.

Protesters want to replace the current government with an appointed administration and are against holding a new general election scheduled for July. The attack comes just days after a Thai court removed former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office. No group has admitted to carrying out the attack.

“There are plenty of soldiers posted near this, the main protest camp, but they could not prevent” the attack, the BBC’s Jonathan Head reports.

Since the protest campaign began last November, at least 27 people have been killed and hundreds wounded. The country’s lucrative tourism industry has been badly hit.
