Thousands of flights cancelled in new US storm

A further 800 flights pre-emptively axed for Wednesday

More than 3,000 flights have been grounded as a new, fast-moving winter storm sends snow and Arctic temperatures back to the north-eastern United States.

A further 800 flights have been pre-emptively cancelled for Wednesday. Thousands of air passengers are stranded at airports.

Amtrak has cut back train services along its popular north-eastern route.

Government services and schools between the Great Lakes and the east coast have been closed as temperatures plunge up to 20 degrees Celsius below normal. Temperatures will fall below freezing as far south as northern Florida.

The western half of the United States, meanwhile, has above-average temperatures and a worsening drought.
