Three killed in bus hijack in Norway

Man from South Sudan surrenders to firefighters

Three passengers have been killed what appears to have been a bus hijacking in western Norway.

A woman and two men were the victims of the hijacker – a 31-year-old man from South Sudan. He was disarmed without a fight once emergency services arrived on the scene, taken by helicopter to a hospital in Bergen and treated for knife injuries.

Initial reports pointed to a traffic accident involving a bus at 5.30pm, but when fire services arrived at the scene in snowy weather they realised that it was different.

“The bus was on the side of the road, so we stopped our car and ran over. It was impossible to open the doors,” one of team told TV2.

“Then we saw a dark-skinned person inside the bus. At first we thought he was trying to get out but then saw he was moving around with a knife.”

Magne Knutsen of the Årdal police told media company VG: “The person came out voluntarily from the bus and was arrested by the firefighters. He had already thrown down the knife.”

The Valdresekpressen bus, which makes a four-hour journey through the mountainous region of Valdres to Oslo, was hijacked between the towns of Årdal and Tyin.

The victims include the driver, a Norwegian man in his 50s, a Swedish man in his 50s and a 19-year-old Norwegian girl. They are believed to have been the only passengers.

The incident evokes memories of a similar incident in 2003 when a Valdresekpressen bus was hijacked by a mentally disturbed 26-year-old Ethiopian man who killed the driver with a knife.
