Tourist arrested in incident at the Rock Bottom bar
An electrician from Scotland has been arrested in Dubai for indecency for trying to stop a drink from spilling. The tourist, aged 27, now faces three years in prison.
Moving through a crowded bar carrying a drink, Jamie Harron used his other hand to prevent the drink from spilling but accidentally brushed a man on the hip, according to his friends.
After he sat at a table at the Rock Bottom bar, the man approached him seeming upset. Police then arrived and arrested Harron, charging him with public indecency.
A campaign group called Detained in Dubai says Harron has since lost his job and has so far spent more than £30,000 (€33,500) on legal fees and expenses. He was held for five days in prison before being released on bail, his passport confiscated.
“It is quite outrageous that he has been held in the country for so long already,” said Radha Stirling, chief executive of Detained in Dubai. “This is another example of how vulnerable tourists are to arrest and detention in Dubai and at how drawn out and disorganised legal proceedings are.”
