Tourist shot as family enters Rio favela

Family car with three children inside is fired on
After mistakenly driving into a slum to buy water near Rio, Brazil, a British family with three children was fired on and the mother shot.
The incident happened at the holiday hotspot Angra dos Reis as the family drove into a favela. The woman was hit twice in the abdomen. Her husband and children, all aged under four, were unhurt.
The coastal destination of Angra dos Reis is about 150 kilometres west of Rio on the Costa Verde. Reports say that a group approached the car and told the family to get out before opening fire.
A local police chief said the family were trying to buy water but were told to head to the community of Água Santa (‘Holy Water’).
“This whole confusion seems to have happened partly because of the language barrier,” he said. “They ended up driving towards the Água Santa community where they were challenged by criminals. Because they didn’t understand the order they received to leave the area, they just carried on and were shot at.”
