Travel warning issued for travel to Maldives

UK Foreign Office changes its travel advice for paradise islands

The British Foreign Office has altered is travel advice for Male, capital of the Maldives, warning against all but essential travel. Political demonstrations in the capital have turned violent in recent weeks and President Mohamed Nasheed decided to resign yesterday. The president is being held against his will, while some of his advisors, both male and female, have been beaten up. Insiders say that the regime of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was in power for 30 years until 2008, is attempting to reestablish control.
There are no reports of disturbances at Malé International Airport or at the islands’ resorts, but the Foreign Office warns that the situation is “uncertain” and that anyone travelling to Male should “exercise caution, avoid demonstrations and beware of spontaneous gatherings”.
