Travel warnings in place for Egypt resorts

Hijackings and kidnappings occur near Sharm el Sheikh

Tourist resorts in Sharm el Sheikh are open and operating as normal, but tourists should avoid all but essential travel to the inland areas of South Sinai and should not venture at all to North Sinai. This is the latest travel warning issued for Egypt by the UK’s foreign ministry, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Patrols and checkpoints are reportedly being increased around Sharm el Sheikh.
“We advise against all but essential travel to the Governorate of South Sinai, with the exception of the Red Sea Resorts including those in the entire region of Sharm el Sheikh, Taba, Nuweiba and Dahab; road travel between these resorts; and transfers between the resorts and the airports of Taba and Sharm el Sheikh,” the ministry says. Tourists should also not visit St Catherine’s Monastery.
The “major tourist resorts remain stable and calm”, but a number of hijackings and kidnappings have occurred recently in the region.
