Uzbek kills five Argentinean friends, a Belgian and others
Donald Trump has ordered the US Department of Homeland Security to step up its ‘extreme vetting program’ following the biggest terror attack in New York since 9/11.
A Belgian citizen and five Argentinians were among the eight people killed on Tuesday afternoon as Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbek who arrived in the US on a Green Card in 2010, drove a pickup truck down a bike path in lower Manhattan. The truck then crashed into a school bus.
“I have just ordered homeland security to step up our already extreme vetting program. Being politically correct is fine, but not for this!” the president said on Twitter.
Trump has called on numerous occasions for what he calls extreme vetting of foreigners entering the US. But exactly what practices will change remains unclear.
A former Uber driver, Saipov has a Florida driving license but was living in New Jersey, reports say. He was shot by police and is now in custody.
Witnesses says he shouted “Allahu Akbar”, Arabic for “God is great”, during the attack. Inside the vehicle was a note expressing support for Isis, but all signs point to this being a ‘lone wolf’ attack “by a very sick and deranged person”, as Trump put it.
