Two injured as Scandlines/HH ferry hits pier

Mercandia IV rams pier at port of Helsingborg

The Scandlines / HH-Ferries ferry Mercandia IV rammed a pier at the port of Helsingborg a little before 21:00 on Sunday evening. Two people were hurt and taken to hospital in the incident.

The ferry plies the line between Helsingborg and Elsinore. A crew member and an elderly passenger suffered minor injuries, and a notification of negligence in sea traffic has been established.

The collision tore a hole in the hull on the port side in front of the bow, looking straight into the car deck.

“All of a sudden they cry out ‘hold it, hold it!’, then it crashed. It was scary and people fell over and hurt themselves,” said 20-year-old Alexandra Premholt who was on the boat.

Jimmy Lundberg, who was in the cafeteria at the time, said that “the captain said with a stressed voice ‘hold fast, hold fast’. In the middle of the sentence the boat slammed and came to a sudden stop. Shelves, dinnerware and everything else just fell out. An elderly lady hit her head and got a deep cut on her forehead.”

The circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.
