UK airports with biggest flight delays listed

As a new ranking lists the UK’s 25 major airports by departure punctuality, there are calls for infrastructure modernisation.

Flights from Luton Airport near London were delayed for longer, on average, than any other airport in the UK during 2017, according to new analysis by the country’s civil aviation authority.

The punctuality figures found that departures from Luton were 20 minutes late on average, while the average delay to flights from the country’s 25 busiest airports was 15 minutes, the Press Association reports.

London Gatwick was not far behind at 19 minutes, as were other increasingly busy airports such as Birmingham and Bristol, at around 18 minutes, and Belfast, Manchester and London Stansted at just under 17 minutes.

But it was the busiest airport of them all, London Heathrow, which was the best performing in the UK, with an average delay of 11 minutes delay, and London City was not far off with 11.6 minutes.

The list takes into account all scheduled and chartered flights but excludes cancelled flights.

The UK’s airspace infrastructure is “outdated” and needs modernisation, a spokesperson at the Airport Operators Association protested after seeing the list. London Luton recently embarked on a major expansion of its terminal.
