Ukraine: MH17 was struck by “missile shrapnel”

Plane suffered “massive explosive decompression” after being hit

Ukrainian security officials claim that the downed Malaysia Airlines plane in eastern Ukraine suffered an explosive loss of pressure after it was punctured by shrapnel from a missile.

Ukrainian security spokesman Andrei Lysenko said on Monday that the plane suffered “massive explosive decompression” after being hit by fragments from a missile, the BBC reported.

This information reportedly came from the plane’s flight data recorders, which are now being analysed by British experts. But it remains unclear who fired the missile; pro-Russian rebels and Ukraine continue to blame each other.

Dutch investigators leading the inquiry into the crash are understood to have refused to comment on the Ukrainian claims. Meanwhile, an international police force comprising Australian and Dutch officers was prevented from reaching the crash site for a second consecutive day by heavy fighting.

“We are sick and tired of being interrupted by gunfights, despite the fact that we have agreed that there should be a ceasefire,” said Alexander Hug, deputy head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s team in Ukraine.
