Unique tourism product prospers in Portugal

Upmarket houseboats see occupancy reaching 100%

As the Portuguese economy flounders, occupancy rates at Amieira Marina have fluctuated between 80% and 100%. This summer season was the best for the marina’s unique rental of lake houseboats since business began in 2006. Stays on the upscale vessels, which can accommodate between two and 12 people, average about five nights and there are many repeat visits.
Located on Alqueva Great Lake in southern Portugal, the marina has a Blue Flag award for environmental quality and sustainability. A panoramic Michelin-recommended restaurant and other facilities can be found onshore. The largely pastoral region is famed for its traditional local cuisine and world-class wines.
