Opening of 2014 Winter Olympics takes place today
The official opening takes place today of the 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, in the Russian seaside resort of Sochi.
Most of the $50 billion spent on the event has gone on travel infrastructure such as the construction of a new airport, new roads, tunnels and rail links. With future events coming up, like the first Russian Formula 1 Grand Prix in October, it is hoped that Sochi will be introduced to the world as a top-class destination for sports and tourism.
Many Sochi residents now have new views from their apartment windows. Impressive structures such as the 12,000-seat Bolshoy Ice Dome, which will stage the hockey events, and the Fisht Stadium have been built especially for the Games. They have roofs covered in thousands of LEDs, which light them up in different colours at night. During the day the Bolshoy arena is silver, designed to resemble a frozen drop of water.
