Vibrator in luggage causes bomb scare

Berlin’s Schönefeld Airport is shut down after security teams think they find an explosive device.

Security staff at Berlin’s Schönefeld Airport suspected the worst when they spotted a suspicious looking device in luggage being checked in for a flight. But the reality turned out to be less explosive.

When the device was detected during a regular X-ray of a passenger’s bag, part of the terminal was immediately evacuated and flights were grounded, the newspaper Berliner Morgenpost reports.

Explaining what happened in a social media post, the passenger said he was found by security officials at passport control and quickly escorted away to the baggage handling area.

“When I arrived, the terminal was being evacuated,” he wrote. “I approached a police officer and told him that I needed to check my bag with the baggage handlers. He asked my name and for my passport. He then spoke into his radio and several armed police swarmed me with automatic weapons.”

Bomb squad
The confused anonymous passenger told the news outlet RT that he was led to a secure area where a member of the bomb squad, wearing full protective gear, approached his bag.

“After 60 tense minutes, [he] returned laughing,” the passenger said. “The hand grenade was in fact a vibrator from Ann Summers that my girlfriend and I had purchased two weeks previous.”

The assembled security forces reportedly found the incident very amusing. But the embarrassed passenger returned to the gate to find his flight had already departed.

Federal Police confirmed the incident, telling Berliner Morgenpost: “The area around the luggage counter was shut off for an hour, which also affected some other check-in counters.”
