Viking Line to open “huge” tax-free

Enlarged shopping area on new vessel in 2021.

The Finnish ferry operator Viking Line says it will have additional tax-free space at its disposal when it launches its latest vessel in 2021.

The new vessel, which will have capacity for 2,800 passengers, will sail on the popular route between Turku in Finland via Aland to Stockholm, replacing the M/S Amorella.

Designed by Swedish architects Koncept Stockholm, the ship is being built in China by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co.

“We will have a huge tax-free store on board and it is something incredibly special to get this additional space,” Kim Engblom, the line’s head of sales and purchasing told DFNI at a recent Viking Line Whisky Fair on board MS/Cinderella. “We need this to give us the opportunity to explore new things in the shopping environment.”

Multi-category range
The launch of the new vessel will be an excellent opportunity to build on the strong commercial sales seen on M/S Viking Grace, Engblom said, a ship that boasts a large multi-category tax-free store and the first standalone Victoria’s Secret on a ship.

“The tax-free space on the new vessel will be slightly smaller than that on M/S Grace. The most important thing is that we obtain enough space to play with.” he added.

Customers will get a chance to suggest names for the new ferry in advance of the launch. The rest of the Viking Line fleet includes Viking Grace, Amorella, Viking XPRS, Mariella, Cinderella, Gabriella and Rosella.
