Volcano date sparks marketing campaign

Sumbawa takes centre stage in new campaign

“Tambora Greets the World 2015” is the title of a new tourism marketing campaign for the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, marking the 200th anniversary of the eruption of Mount Tambora, an active volcano on the island.
The regional government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is rolling out the campaign, which aims to attract around two million international and domestic tourists to the province. It follows the success of the Visit Lombok-Sumbawa 2012 campaign which concentrated on the better known neighbouring island of Lombok.
“In the last five years we have managed to develop tourism in West Nusa Tenggara with Lombok as a focus,” Muhammad Zainal Majdi, the governor of NTB, said. “It is now time to focus on neighbouring Sumbawa island, as momentum builds up towards the 200-year [anniversary] of Mount Tambora’s eruption.”
Underwater attractions and MICE are said to be among the attractions of Sumbawa. The regional government says it will develop infrastructure and facilities on the island including roads and hotels. Festivals are also scheduled to take place between now and 2015.
