Weirdest food festivals in the world named

Throw tomatoes at 50,000 people, throw tuna or eat roasted mealworms

Inspired by the world’s biggest food fight, La Tomatina, which is held on the last Wednesday in August every year in Buñol, near Valencia in Spain, MSNBC names the strangest festivals associated with food. La Tomatina attracts somewhere in the region of 50,000 people who throw in excess of 110,000 kilograms of overripe tomatoes at each other. The tradition is said to have started because of a local brawl. The event begins only when someone manages to climb a greased pole to reach a leg of ham at the top, after which tomatoes are thrown for an hour.
The Tunarama Festival in Port Lincoln, Australia, involves throwing 10-kilo tuna fish as far as they can. At the Cheese Curd Festival in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, USA, there are curd-eating competitions and a cheese-carving contest. And at BugFest in North Carolina, not only can you cheer insects on at the Roach Race 5000, you can also eat insect-based dishes made by local chefs, from cricket cornbread to a Thai salad with roasted mealworms.
