Why are young people choosing cruise?

Average age of cruise passengers falls to lowest in 20 years
Cruise passengers are getting younger, and lines are welcoming a new audience, the BBC reports. The average age of cruise passengers has fallen to its lowest in 20 years.
There is also a record number of leisure travellers overall opting to take to the seas, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. Some operators need more ships to cope with demand.
Cruises have become more accessible in recent years and several factors have come together to cause this changing market.
There is a vast choice of ships that appeal to family groups as well as millennials.
“I’ve just been on a two-day cruise to France and I’ve never seen such a young demographic,” says one cruiser. “There were hen parties, 40th birthday groups, multi-generational and small family groups.”
There’s also growth in theme cruising, with anchored ship-based dance festivals and cruises from Star Trek to music themes.
For many, cruises are also good value. For families, kids’ clubs are included, as is all of the food and entertainment. The childcare is of a high standard and the ships are generally very safe.
There have also been big advances in technology and internet connectivity, which is in the cruise lines’ favour as it’s all about the experience.
Passengers regularly call the food the best they have ever had, although some might also say there is a risk of mass outbreaks of sickness and diarrhoea. For several lines, poor pay and conditions for crew members are also a concern.
The average age of a cruise passenger is still 55, but companies are working to expand into younger and family markets.
