Winter freeze stops travel across Europe

Plunging temperatures kill dozens and bring travel to a halt

As temperatures across Europe plunge this week to as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius or more, advisories are being issued to postpone travel where possible. Temperatures fell to minus 30 in the Baltic countries last night, while minus 50 was felt in parts of Siberia. Dozens of people, many of them homeless, have been killed by the deep freeze on the streets of Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Romania and elsewhere. A man in a Kiev hospital with severe frostbite said: “I drank a bit and slept on a bench, woke up in the night and couldn’t feel my legs.”
Heavy snow has stopped flights and disrupted traffic in Switzerland and northern Italy. Travellers have been advised to postpone long journeys in regions such as Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont and Tuscany, and a civil protection agency has declared a state of alert in Bologna. Greece and Turkey are seeing heavy snowfalls and shipping has been temporarily closed. “It has completely affected daily life in Istanbul,” one man said. “No shops are open and there is no traffic.” Cold weather will continue until the end of the week.
