World’s first “wellness hostel” opens in Alps

Swiss hostel gives budget travellers classy spa treatment

A youth hostel with five-star facilities such as Jacuzzis, herbal steam baths, an extensive massage program, hydromassage showers, a Finnish sauna and a tapas bar has opened in Switzerland, in one of the world’s priciest ski destinations. It calls itself the world’s first “wellness hostel” and is part of a trend for upmarket hostels, with rooms that look more like boutique hotels.

WellnessHostel 4000, in the alpine village of Saas-Fee, Valais, still has the usual hostel features – dormitories, bunk beds and shared showers. But the entertainment is very different.

“It is quite a relaxing place,” manager Denise Emmerich said. “We have the mountain views and it is a quiet location. You have access to the sports and skiing in the mountains but also to calm – also helped by the fact that Saas-Fee is a car-free village.”

She added that the hostel has so far seen a mix of guests, such as ski teams and people young and old. Prices for beds start at around 50 francs (£30). By contrast, the nearby resorts of Verbier and St Moritz are among the world’s most expensive ski destinations.
