Year off to record start in Sweden

Swedavia’s airports see 10% passenger growth
More and more Swedes are choosing to fly, the latest figures suggest. During the first month of 2017, passenger volume was up a full 10% at operator Swedavia’s airports, reaching a total of 2,854,000.
Both domestic and international traffic increased sharply compared to January 2016. At Stockholm Arlanda, international traffic rose by as much as 13% during the month.
Nearly 1,846,000 passengers flew internationally via Swedavia’s airports in January, also a 10% increase, while domestic traffic shows an 8% increase, to 1,008,000 passengers.
“More and more people are choosing to fly to and from our airports, which shows how crucial air travel is for Sweden’s growth,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia president and CEO. “When we look at passenger volume over the past twelve months, we are really close to the historic 40 million mark.”
In the latest rolling 12-month period, the total number of passengers increased 5% to 39,761,000 (domestic traffic up 4%, international up 6%). If this passenger growth continues, Swedavia says there are many indications it may surpass 40 million passengers in 2017.
For the two largest airports, travel in January set a new passenger record. More than 1,799,000 passengers flew to or from Stockholm Arlanda, up 12%. At Göteborg Landvetter, 446,500 passengers were counted, up 5%, reaching the highest figure for January in the history of the airport.
Other substantial increases were seen at Kiruna, up 19% to 26,400; Ronneby, up 17% to 17,300; Åre Östersund, up 15% to 44,300; and Visby, up 12% to 24,300.
